什么是推薦信
不管是申請(qǐng)醫(yī)學(xué)院、法學(xué)院還是其他學(xué)科,不管是出國(guó)讀碩士、博士還是申請(qǐng)工作,都需要推薦信。推薦信是請(qǐng)教授從他的視角客觀地對(duì)你進(jìn)行評(píng)價(jià),證明你個(gè)人的技能和特點(diǎn)的文書,是美國(guó)大學(xué)申請(qǐng)的基本文件之一。一般說來美國(guó)的研究生院要求提供 3 封推薦信,信件作者應(yīng)該熟悉學(xué)生,并且有一定知名度。
推薦信的意義
推薦信其實(shí)是學(xué)校深入全面了解你的一個(gè)方式,也就是說你在寫你的 application 的時(shí)候,任何地方都有字?jǐn)?shù)限制,可是只有推薦信這是沒有字?jǐn)?shù)限制的,而且推薦信是唯一一個(gè)可以別人給你意見的地方,所以各個(gè)學(xué)校都十分想要知道其他人對(duì)你是怎么看的,也是幫你補(bǔ)充申請(qǐng)材料的一個(gè)好地方。
另外一個(gè)意義呢,其實(shí)就是所謂的叫 verification,你在你的申請(qǐng) personal statement 和 activity 里面都寫了很多自己的優(yōu)點(diǎn)。但是并沒有人能證明你說的是否都是真實(shí)的,所以推薦信的作用之一就是 verify 你的活動(dòng)。
應(yīng)該找誰要推薦信
可以找熟悉自己、和申請(qǐng)專業(yè)相關(guān)的老師(比如修過該老師的課、一起做過 research 的)很多人會(huì)下意識(shí)去找自己成績(jī)比較好的那門課的負(fù)責(zé)老師。當(dāng)然這個(gè)很重要,但是最重要的其實(shí)是對(duì)你在課堂之外的表現(xiàn)也很了解的老師;也可以找實(shí)習(xí)地點(diǎn)直系負(fù)責(zé)人,盡量找比較熟悉自己的 supervisor。有很多熟悉的上司情況下,職稱越高越好。還有什么人可供選擇呢?就是你參加過的校外活動(dòng)的負(fù)責(zé)人。他們作為見證者,不僅能證實(shí)你確實(shí)參加過某些活動(dòng),還能使招生官?gòu)囊粋(gè)課外的角度來了解你。
如何要到好的推薦信
好的推薦信,有的時(shí)候并不一定需要做過一些什么驚天動(dòng)地的事情,反而是老師平時(shí)觀察到的令人印象深刻的小事更能吸引人的眼球。所以好的推薦信,其實(shí)最主要的一點(diǎn)還是平時(shí)點(diǎn)點(diǎn)滴滴的積累。
同時(shí)同學(xué)們應(yīng)當(dāng)找一些年級(jí)稍微大一點(diǎn)的老師要推薦信,他們對(duì)寫推薦信也比較有經(jīng)驗(yàn),他們更清楚應(yīng)該在平時(shí)觀察一些你的什么品質(zhì),寫推薦信的時(shí)候把你的人品做一個(gè)很詳細(xì)的介紹,讓大學(xué)了解更多你在課堂之外的東西。
我們可以提前準(zhǔn)備一個(gè) information packet,把自己經(jīng)歷過的的活動(dòng)都寫下來,根據(jù)重要性寫一個(gè)排名,讓老師知道哪一個(gè)需要重點(diǎn)看,哪一個(gè)可以一掃而過。做好這個(gè)information packet,能讓推薦人快速了解你,同時(shí)幫他寫出內(nèi)容更詳實(shí)的推薦信。
好的 information packet 可以在前面列一個(gè)提綱,用概括性的標(biāo)示分類,而后再詳細(xì)寫下來你都干了什么事情,這樣以方便你的推薦人隨時(shí)翻回去重新看。然后下面可以把這些活動(dòng)按時(shí)間順序排名,最重要的可以 highlight 。每一個(gè)活動(dòng)都要有一個(gè)簡(jiǎn)短介紹。至于所獲獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng),就大概寫一下是什么級(jí)別的獎(jiǎng),有多少人參加。整理好之后,在你邀請(qǐng)推薦人幫你寫推薦信的時(shí)候可以直接把這個(gè) information packet 給他們,他們?cè)趯懲扑]信的時(shí)候就可以參考這個(gè)材料。
還又一個(gè)就是上面講的 verified activity,證實(shí)你做過你說的這些活動(dòng),如果有 information packet,你的老師也在推薦信中強(qiáng)調(diào)了你做過的這些活動(dòng)的話,等于說上了雙層保險(xiǎn)。
所以大一大二的同學(xué)建議從現(xiàn)在開始就給自己做一個(gè) activity list,做這個(gè)對(duì)申請(qǐng)是有非常正面的影響的,因?yàn)椴还苣銓砩暾?qǐng)什么一般都是要寫 activity 的。有了這樣一份記錄,到時(shí)候做 personal statement 的時(shí)候,也可以做一個(gè)你自己的 reference,不至于無處下筆。
想要要到好的推薦信還有比較重要的`一點(diǎn)是時(shí)間。你一定要給你的推薦人預(yù)留足夠的時(shí)間構(gòu)思這個(gè)推薦信,不能跟他說我明天這封推薦信就要交了,今天才去問老師要,那你的推薦信很難會(huì)是好的推薦信。要注意教授也有其他的事情要做,你不能指望他用一天寫出來一個(gè)好的推薦信,一般推薦信都是要慢慢寫,慢慢琢磨,慢慢改的。所以一定要給你老師足夠的時(shí)間去寫。其實(shí)所謂的足夠的時(shí)間,基本上是越早越好,盡量早地跟老師表明你的意圖,讓老師有所準(zhǔn)備。
注意:老師如果讓同學(xué)自己寫,同學(xué)需盡量說服老師用官方郵箱自己上傳。同學(xué)在選校名單確定后,開啟網(wǎng)申,輸入老師郵箱,學(xué)校的系統(tǒng)會(huì)給老師的郵箱發(fā)送鏈接。同學(xué)將選校名單、推薦信和最晚上傳截止日期列表發(fā)送老師。確認(rèn)老師在 deadline 之前完成上傳,無法當(dāng)面見面的老師,必須用郵件確認(rèn)以上步驟。

推薦信怎么寫?
推薦信長(zhǎng)度沒有具體的要求,但不宜過長(zhǎng),盡量控制在 1 頁 A 4 紙內(nèi)。段落控制在 5 到 8 段,總字?jǐn)?shù)控制在 200 到 600 詞之間比較好。
推薦信結(jié)構(gòu)
