雙語閱讀《老人與�！饭�(jié)選

　　《老人與�！�，美國作家海明威著�！独先伺c�！肥呛Ｃ魍�的代表作，也是一部象征性的小說。這部小說是根據(jù)一位古巴漁夫的真實(shí)經(jīng)歷創(chuàng)作的，以攝象機(jī)般的寫實(shí)手法記錄了桑提亞哥老人捕魚的全過程，塑造了一個(gè)在重壓下仍然保持優(yōu)雅風(fēng)度、在精神上永遠(yuǎn)不可戰(zhàn)勝的老人形象。

　　老人與海The Old Man and the Sea

　　The fish moved steadily and they travelled slowly on the calm water. The other baits were still in the water but there was nothing to be done. "I wish I had the boy," the old man said aloud. "I'm being towed by a fish and I'm the towing bit. I could make the line fast. But then he could break it. I must hold him all I can and give him line when he must have it. Thank God he is travelling and not going down."

　　魚很穩(wěn)定地移動(dòng)，老人和它在平靜的水面上一起緩慢地移動(dòng)著。其它幾個(gè)魚餌仍然在水中，但是已經(jīng)無暇顧之了�！肝艺嫦Ｍ�小男孩在我身邊�！估先舜舐暤卣f：「現(xiàn)在，我竟成了栓在繩子上的桿子一般，被這條魚拖著走。如果我把線死死地固定住了的話，這條魚準(zhǔn)會(huì)把它給掙斷。我必須使盡所有力量跟著它，才能在必要時(shí)放出線來。感謝上帝保佑，它是往前游，而不是往下沉�！�

　　What I will do if he decides to go down, I don't know. What I'll do if he sounds and dies I don't know. But I'll do something. There are plenty of things I can do. He held the line against his back and watched its slant in the water and the skiff moving steadily to the northwest. This will kill him, the old man thought. He can't do this forever. But four hours later the fish was still swimming steadily out to sea, towing the skiff, and the old man was still braced solidly with the line across his back.

　　我實(shí)在不曉得，如果它決定往下沉?xí)r，我該怎么辦呢?假如它潛入水底死了，我也不曉得該怎么辦。但是我總會(huì)想出點(diǎn)辦法來的，應(yīng)該會(huì)有很多對(duì)策來應(yīng)付的。他把魚線橫跨在背上，觀察著斜入水中的魚線，小船正穩(wěn)定地朝西北方向移動(dòng)。老人心想，這樣繼續(xù)下去那條魚也會(huì)完蛋的，它總不能永遠(yuǎn)這樣撐著啊。但是四個(gè)小時(shí)過去了，魚還是很穩(wěn)定地拖著小船游向大海，那繩子還依然牢牢地跨在老人的背上。

　　"It was noon when I hooked him," he said. "And I have never seen him." He had pushed his straw hat hard down on his head before he hooked the fish and it was cutting his forehead. He was thirsty too and he got down on his knees and, being careful not to jerk on the line, moved as far into the bow as he could get and reached the water bottle with one hand. He opened it and drank a little. Then he rested against the bow. He rested sitting on the un-stepped mast and sail and tried not to think but only to endure.

　　「我在中午釣到它，」他說，「直到現(xiàn)在，都還沒有看過它呢?」他還沒有釣到魚之前，一直都將頭上的草帽用力地往下壓，使得他的額頭現(xiàn)在像是被割過般的發(fā)疼。他的口也渴了，為了怕觸動(dòng)魚線，他跪下來，盡量小心翼翼地將一只手伸向船頭拿水瓶。他打開水瓶喝了點(diǎn)水，然后坐在船桅桿和帆座上，靠著船頭休息，盡量叫自己不要去想什么，只要忍耐就是了。

　　Then he looked behind him and saw that no land was visible. That makes no difference, he thought. I can always come in on the glow from Havana. There are two more hours before the sunsets and maybe he will come up before that. If he doesn't maybe he will come up with the moon. If he does not do that maybe he will come up with the sunrise. I have no cramps and I feel strong. It is he that has the hook in his mouth. But what a fish to pull like that. He must have his mouth shut tight on the wire. I wish I could see him. I wish I could see him only once to know what I have against me.

　　他回頭望了望，發(fā)現(xiàn)已經(jīng)完全看不見陸地了。他想，這也沒什么關(guān)系，哈瓦那那兒的光總會(huì)指引我進(jìn)港的。離太陽下山還有兩個(gè)小時(shí)，也許那魚在太陽下山之前就會(huì)浮出水面了。如果沒有的話，或許它會(huì)和月亮一起出現(xiàn)。而如果再不是的話，它大概就會(huì)和明天的太陽一起升起。我不常抽筋，而且感覺自己還很健壯，何況嘴里銜著魚鉤的是那條魚哩�？墒�，能這樣拖著漁船走的魚，真是不可思議。它一定是把嘴巴閉得緊緊地，咬著釣上的鐵線。真希望能看看它，只要一眼就行，好讓我曉得到底是什么在與我作對(duì)。

　　The fish never changed his course nor his direction all that night as far as the man could tell from watching the stars. It was cold after the sun went down and the old man's sweat dried cold on his back and his arms and his old legs. During the day he had taken the sack that covered the bait box and spread it in the sun to dry. After the sun went down he tied it around his neck so that it hund down over his back and he cautiously worked it down under the line that was across his shoulders now.

　　一整夜魚都沒改變它的航道或航向。老人從觀察星象就可以知道了。太陽下山之后空氣變得很涼，老人的手臂、背脊，和他那一雙老腿上的汗都干了，使他更覺冰冷。白天的時(shí)候他拿出了一個(gè)用來蓋魚餌箱的袋子，把它放在太陽下曬干。太陽下山后，他便把那個(gè)袋子圍在脖子上綁著，讓它垂披在背上，把袋子墊在橫跨肩膀的魚線下。
